- Charting Your AD/HD Journey: A presentation based on the book Journeys Through ADDulthood by Sari Solden
- Are you an adult with AD/HD who takes medication, uses planners and organizers, but just can’t seem to achieve satisfaction? Do you feel that you don’t know who you are anymore and are just treading water? This presentation will focus on a roadmap Sari Solden lays out in her book Journeys Through ADDulthood, a roadmap that fosters a deep sense of self-acceptance and authenticity. The book is organized into three “Journeys” or developmental stages of living with AD/HD. We’ll take a look at each “Journey” in this session, look at step-by-step resolution, and finally, ways to move forward. I have found this book to be invaluable in the work I do with my AD/HD clients. Sari’s “Journeys” provides a roadmap or template for the work that lies ahead of you. It is important for you to know where you are going, more about the choices to make, and how to recognize how you are successful on your journey. Offerred once each day. The employment rate of working-age adults with disabilities continues to be dramatically below that of other adults despite civil rights legislation and various initiatives to improve education and increase employment and earnings. The most recent survey conducted by Louis Harris and Associates (2000) indicates that only 29% of persons with disabilities, aged 18-65, are employed full or part-time. - Grassroots Advocacy: Becoming an Agent of Change
- Learn how to develop a foundation in grassroots advocacy that can be used to counter the ongoing onslaught on the educational rights of students with disabilities. Legislation affecting the rights of parents and students covered under IDEA and Section 504 are continually drafted and introduced. School districts and SELPAs are moving fast to restrict or eliminate essential rights to a free and appropriate education. Parents and advocates are not only called upon to be knowledgeable at IEP/504 meetings but now have to be savvy change agents in the political arena. With limited resources --- time, energy, finances, manpower, and no paid lobbyist, it is challenging to move forward with precision and impact. When schools and SELPAs initiate potentially devastating legislation, with seemingly unlimited resources, they are well-prepared to move forward with success. Offered just once. - The Physical Experience of ADD
- The primary treatment of Attention Deficit Disorder is by application of medical and behavioral prescriptions. The treatment may also focus on the painful emotions that often surround this disorder. However, less attention is paid to the related physical experiences. Very often, an individual with ADD is not in the experience of his or her body; sometimes because that experience is painful. Being physically out of touch can also be due to the on going distractions of internal or external auditory and visual experiences. This sets up a situation in which one can feel out of balance and overwhelmed. Utilizing practices that involve stepping back into one's physical experience can effectively slow down and refocus much of the distracted energy. This workshop will focus on the physical experiences associated with ADD. This will include: (1) Describing and mapping the physical symptoms. (2) Discussion and practice of strategies which enhance the ability to do symptom management. This session is appropriate for addults, partners, parents and professionals.
