- "The Link", Attention Deficit Disorder and Chemical Dependency
- Individuals affected attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder(ADHD) are disproportionately represented in chemical dependency treatment. Many of them undiagnosed and more likely to have poorer treatment outcomes, longer duration of use and slower rates of remission than non-LD treatment participants—often despite earlier and more frequent exposure to treatment. This session will explore this challenge and provide participants with information about why and what they can do to make the changes necessary to help these individuals become more successful.

- ADD Tag-A-Longs: Co- Occuring Conditions to Look Out For
- People will learn that ADHD rarely occurs by itself. They will learn that, depending on gender and age, there are commonly associated co-occurring conditions, which not properly diagnosed, will result in sub-optimal therapeutic responses. They will learn how to screen for and identify those conditions and incorporate that into their practices. They will learn when it may be appropriate to obtain functional neuron-imaging if there are too many conflicting, overlapping co-morbidities, especially mood disorders. In addition, depending on the specific type of co-morbidity, they will learn a specific treatment approach which will lead to better outcomes for their ADHD patients.

- And I'm Supposed to Exercise TOO? Gear Up Your Success Cycle
- Have you wondered how to fit exercise into your life, and REGULARLY too? Most of us already know that exercise is important for good health and experts in the ADD field suggest that vigorous physical exercise improves brain function. To improve health and fitness habits, adults with ADD as well as allied professionals who participate in this creative and interactive session will use ADD expert Kathleen Nadeau’s framework for success, Structure, Support & ADD-Friendly Strategies. The session will provide practice at personalizing the Three S’s framework to address specific ADD challenges and other obstacles. By working with the Template for Change provided in the current Conference Booklet, a base for encouraging successful change will be constructed which participants can apply to physical/mental fitness and other areas of life.

- Fidget to Focus at Home
- The dysregulated and under-aroused ADHD brain craves stimulation to avoid boredom and to stay focused. When we are unaware of this dynamic, our ADD brain is likely to fluctuate from paying attention to absolutely everything to the other extreme of hyper-focusing. This appears to others as distracted, impulsive, and restless on the one hand, to not listening and rudely oblivious on the other. The choice for self-management of ADHD affect comes with the awareness that our sensory system is already operating as a natural regulator for keeping us comfortably in charge of our own focus. In this presentation, coach Sarah Wright will explain how doing two things at once is used to counter the tedium of repetitive or boring activities. It is by the simultaneous application of multiple sensory modalities or "fidgeting" that focus can be achieved. For example, the sense of hearing is in primary use while on the phone. With ADHD, hearing alone may not be enough to keep us engaged in the conversation. A natural secondary sensory modality or fidget that can be used simultaneously while on the phone is pacing, a simple sensory-motor activity that assists focus. The presentation will go over the neurological underpinnings of this Body/Brain connection, and then identify fidget strategies that can be applied in specific situations to assist focus.
