Off to a Bad Start: How a Moment's Inattentiveness Almost Ruined My Vacation

We arrived in the Minneapolis–St.Paul airport with our tandem bike, two panniers, two camelbaks and an eagerness for our two week adventure. This was the start of a bike trip through southwest Wisconsin. As usual, before leaving the airport, I had to hit the restroom.

It wasn't until I was outside the airport that I suddenly wondered where my small fanny pack with a few blank checks, my driver's license, my credit card and my digital camera was? Back in the restroom!. And there now was no hope of recovery! No one can get through security without an ID and boarding pass!

My husband did have an American Express card on him—and I quickly thought that my son at home could send me my passport so I would have ID available for the return flight—but we wondered how many places in Wisconsin would take American Express—and what if my passport got lost in the mail?

I went to the airport's Lost and Found and made a report, with little hope of recovery. It was Friday afternoon. They would be closed until Monday, but I got their number to call, just is case. We had Merrill Lynch put a hold on our credit card, hoping against hope that someone would turn in my fanny pack with everything in it! Not very likely!

You can imagine my elation. I called on Monday and my fanny pack has been turned in. (Doesn't Garrison Keillor say something about people in Minnesota being honest?) We made plans to pick it up when we returned to the airport in 2 weeks and promptly called Merrill Lynch to take the hold off the card.

Then they asked the fatal question, "Do you have the card in your possession?" My husband answered truthfully that we did not. And then they said, "We won't remove the hold as the card is not in your possession!" I called back to say my husband had mis–spoken—that we did have it in our possession—desperation can get you to be bold— but I got the same person that spoke with my husband and she said, "I don't believe you. We have a recording of your husband telling us it wasn't in your possession.!" What could we do?

We had Lost and Found overnight the fanny back and called Merrill Lynch back two days later to say it was in our possession. Fortunately, I got someone who didn't know about our recording—someone who readily believed us. It was a fantastic trip, in spite of getting off to a bad start.
