ADD Resources eNews: November 2007
Where Has the Time Gone?Dear Members,
I hope you are finding the time to enjoy the crisp fall weather. But if you are confined to the indoors, take a moment to see the new articles and podcasts we have recently added to the Members Only Section of the website. I hope you are taking advantage of the valuable education this resource offers you.
A Paradigm Shift
Last month, after participating in Dr. Hallowell's teleclass (now available in the Members Only Section for free or for $7 for non-members), I had a paradigm shift. Up until this point in my life and whenever counseling others about their ADHD concerns, I always focused on overcoming the challenges of having or being ADHD. Dr. Hallowell comes at ADHD from a different direction. While not overlooking the importance of learning to manage your ADHD, he also focuses on the "gifts" of ADHD and how to maximize them.
I have to admit that, until that day, I never thought there were "gifts" to having ADHD, but, as Dr. Hallowell laid them out, I agreed—I have those "gifts"—only I had never attributed them to having ADHD!
Through reframing Dr. Hallowell converts the primary negative characteristics of ADHD into positive characteristics. "Distractibility" (a negative) becomes "curiosity" (a positive). Impulsivity (a negative) becomes "creativity" (a positive) and hyperactivity (a negative) becomes "high energy" (a positive). He says that those with ADHD who worked with physicians, therapists and coaches who encourage them to develop the positive aspects of ADHD would make progress.
It reminds me of an old axiom—"What you focus on tends to grow." If you focus on the negatives, they will tend to grow. If you focus on the positives, they will grow. Please take the time to listen to this podcast. It may cause a paradigm shift in you, too, with a resulting new appreciation for yourself and your talents.
Until next month,
Cynthia Hammer, MSW, Director
