ADHD, Asperger's Syndrome, and Social Skills: Structuring Social Focus and Language Skills for Successful Social Interactions.

Objectives:

  1. Explain important differences in the social style of AS versus ADHD, which will enable attendees to recognize strengths in the social style of people with AS and ADHD.
  2. Begin to structure social focus and language skills, to help people with AS or ADHD relate socially based on understanding the role of focus and attention in social skills
  3. Be able to apply skills learned from 10 tips and from having experienced sample Gift of Gab Conversation Group exercises that have helped many develop efficient conversation skills.

The Asperger's Syndrome (AS) and ADHD mind are similar yet so different in many important ways. We'll discuss how these amazing minds differ, and how social focus and attention differ as a result, resulting in unique social styles. This workshop is designed to help you recognize the traits of each in regards to their social style, and apply suggestions for successful social interactions. Attendees will be able to explain strengths of AS and ADHD are often mis-perceived as weaknesses and misdirected. Social skills can be difficult for both groups-or they can be excellent. We will discuss ways to structure social focus and language skills, to help people with AS or ADHD relate socially. Finally, we'll sample some Gift of Gab Conversation Group exercises that have helped many develop efficient conversation skills.


Karen Roe, B.A., OFI, CU is a Personal Support Coach specializing in Asperger's Syndrome (AS) and ADHD. She has been a teacher, coach, writer, group organizer, and facilitator since 1998, and she is a past member of the board of directors of the Autism Society of Washington. In 1998, Karen founded and continues to lead a support group for AS. She is a graduate of the UW, the Optimal Functioning Institute ( a rigorous program that trains ADD coaches), and Coach University. Karen's unique understanding and compassion for the challenges of AS/ADHD began with her own experiences with them and raising her son, who has AS. this first-hand knowledge combined with her teaching experience, love of language, and enthusiasm, set the stage for creating Gift of GabTM, a program designed to teach conversational skills, as well as her coaching practice Karen's book about AS is currently being published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers.
