The Link" Attention Deficit Disorder and Chemical Dependency

Presented by Cyd Imel, Executive Director of the Learning Disabilities Association of Washington

Objectives:

  1. Will be aware of the link between Attention-Deficit Disorder and chemical dependency and what it means to have a dual diagnosis
  2. Will receive information about secondary Impairments of ADD
  3. Will receive information on causes and facts
  4. Will be aware of barriers to effective treatment participation for the ADHD client

Individuals affected attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are disproportionately represented in chemical dependency treatment. Many of them undiagnosed and more likely to have poorer treatment outcomes, longer duration of use and slower rates of remission than non-LD treatment participants— often despite earlier and more frequent exposure to treatment. This session will explore this challenge and provide participants with information about why and what they can do to make the changes necessary to help these individuals become more successful.
