Transition Planning

Objectives:
- The student will develop an understanding of the importance of self-advocacy.
- The student will learn how to self-advocate.
- The student will practice self-advocacy skills.
Attendees will learn the principles of self-advocacy and the importance of a person gaining and practicing those skills from an early age. They will learn effective advocacy techniques, and there will be opportunities to use the skills in this session.
Karen Anderson is the Director of the Parent Training and Information (PTI) program at Washington PAVE. The PTI has 8 staff (Parent Resource Coordinators) in 7 offices across Washington state. In addition, she oversees a cadre of Community Liaisons and Chapter Leaders who are parent volunteers trained by PTI staff to assist other parents in their advocacy in the school system. Karen has been an active advocate for people who had disabilities and a daughter who does not. She has a degree in education and in Speech Pathology. She has taught in general education classes, special education classes as well as providing individual and group speech/language therapy for children and adults. She started at PAVE 17 years ago as a Parent Resource Coordinator and has been the Director of the PTI for 2 ½ years.
