Coaching the ADHD Client—Part II

This telecourse is being offered Monday January 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th and February 4th, 11th, 18th, and 25th from 5-6:3- pm PSt; 6-7:30 pm MSt; 7-8:30 pm CST; and 8-9:30 pm EST.

This course is designed for educators, therapists, psychologists, coaches and any individual interested starting their own AD/HD coaching business. It is also for professionals who would like to add AD/HD coaching services to an existing practice or program. The course includes an overview on AD/HD and teaches basic coaching skills. A workbook will be provided with the course that includes eight sections, one for each teleclass. In addition to the workbook, there is required and suggested reading plus assignments that will prepare you for each teleclass discussion.

Required reading includes Driven to Distraction by Drs. Hallowell and Ratey, 1994; Co-Active Coaching : New Skills for Coaching People Toward Success in Work and Life by Laura Whitworth, et al,; The Magic of Rapport by Jerry Richardson, 2000; Organizing from the Inside Out by Julie Morgenstern, 2004; and Do It! Let's Get Off Our Buts, l994 by Peter McWilliams. As this is a lot of material to read, you might want to get started if you are registering for this class. If you wish, you can easily purchase the books from ADD Resources when you register for the class.

A graduate of Walden University, Sandy Maynard recently completed a Masters in Psychology, researching and writing a literature review of coaching for the purpose of making an academic contribution to her profession. A pioneer in the field of coaching people with Attention Deficit Disorder, Ms. Maynard has established herself as one of the country's preeminent coaches and was instrumental in the development of The National Attention Deficit Disorder Association's Coaching Guidelines. As a founding member of the Institute for the Advancement of ADHD Coaching (IAAC), Sandy is committed to the professional and ethical development of ADHD coaching worldwide. Ms. Maynard lives in Washington, DC where she operates Catalytic Coaching, providing entrepreneurial consulting and coach training for individuals starting their own coaching businesses. Teleclass One: What Is Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder?

Objectives:

  • To describe and categorize the 18 behavioral symptoms used in the diagnosis of AD/HD.
  • To state the five diagnostic criteria for Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.
  • To list the four subtypes of AD/HD.
  • To define the term co–morbid.
  • To list the six most common co–morbid conditions and give a brief description of each.
  • To recognize and categorize medications prescribed in the treatment of AD/HD.
  • To list the four major types of Learning Disabilities often associated with AD/HD, describing each.

Teleclass Two: What is Coaching?

Objectives:

  • To define coaching.
  • To define AD/HD coaching.
  • To define academic coaching.
  • To differentiate coaching from therapy, tutoring and consulting.
  • To describe what characteristics are needed to be a good coach and what characteristic must be avoided.
  • To describe the steps of the H.O.P.E. coaching model and when it would be best to use it.
  • To describe the three phases of the A.C.T. now model for coaching.
  • To list and describe the five coaching skills addressed in the Co–Active Coaching Model.

Teleclass Three: Rapport

Objectives:

  • To define rapport and explain it's importance in coaching.
  • To list six ways to match and mirror.
  • To list three benefits of pacing and leading.
  • To list three benefits of good listening and attending skills.
  • To differentiate internal distractions from external distractions and give examples of how to avoid each.
  • To describe when to use 'why' questions and when not to.
  • To define open ended vs. closed ended questions and describe how and when to use each.

  • To be able to restate in four different ways what the client has said.

Teleclass Four: Coaching Guidelines and Ethics

Objectives:

  • To list the three steps of the time management coaching model.
  • To list the three steps of the coaching model for clutter control.
  • To list the five hurdles of effective time management, giving three suggestions for coping with each.
  • To list six tips for clutter control.

Teleclass Seven: Motivation

Objectives:

  • To define motivation.
  • To identify what Carl Rogers believes to be a major influence on motivation for change.
  • To list three factors that influence one's ability to sustain motivation.
  • To describe internal vs. external and positive vs. negative motivation, giving examples of each.
  • To list five sensory perceptions that can be used to build an effective visualization.
  • To list eight strategies or tools for increasing and/or sustaining motivation.

Teleclass Eight: Last But Not Least—Starting Your Own Coaching Business

Objectives:

  • To have an awareness of what pre-venture considerations must be addressed in starting an AD/HD coaching business.
  • To know the web address of the U.S. Small Business Administration.
  • To list the four components of marketing.
  • To list eleven aspects of promoting your business.
  • To list the three components of a fifteen second commercial.
  • To define patent, copyright, trademark and service mark.
  • To identify the two most important concerns in setting up your office.
