DBCC LOGININFO is used to see information about virtual logs (VDF) inside the log file. It gives the tabular output containing FileID, FileSize, StartOffset, FSeqNo, Status, Parity, CreateLSN columns. Each row corresponds to one VLF.

The number of VLFs range between 2 to 16. I haven’t seen a Database with more than 16 VLFs. When a log file grows and when it is shrunk, it is always in units of VLFs. We can observe the virtual log file using SQL Server DBCC LOGINFO statement.

Today, I am going to explain the internal of SQL Server database transaction log files architecture by using DBCC LOGINFO. Our Transaction log file is just divided into multiple Virtual Log Files known as VLFs. We cannot configure the number of VLF files and the size of VLF Files.

Dec 08, 2011 · I want to ask why do you think that your log file is only 11 MB? It may be possible that you are looking at currently how much log file is being used instead of the total size of the log file. Also look at the CreateLSN column for teh DBCC LOGINFO. If a log file grows, CreateLSN remains the same for all the VLFs that were created by that growth.
