Freeman-ASIA is sponsored by the Freeman Foundation, a private foundation with offices in Honolulu, HI. The Freeman Foundation's major objectives include strengthening the bonds of friendship between the United States and countries of East Asia.

Study Abroad Advisers may set earlier campus deadlines for submission of the Freeman-ASIA Applications. Applicants should contact their advisers about specific campus deadlines before proceeding with the Freeman-ASIA Application.

The first Wesleyan Freeman Asian Scholars enrolled at Wesleyan in September of 1995. The Freeman Foundation, creator of the Wesleyan Freeman Asian Scholarship Program, was established in 1994 through the bequest of Mansfield Freeman, a businessman, benefactor, scholar and longtime resident in Asia who was a member of the Wesleyan University Class of 1916.

Freeman-ASIA (Freeman Awards for Study in Asia) is designed to support American undergraduates with demonstrated financial need who are planning to study overseas in East or Southeast Asia. The program’s goal is to increase the number of Americans with first-hand exposure to and understanding of Asia and its peoples and cultures.

Students must: be a US citizen or permanent residenthave a 2.8 GPAhave a current FAFSA on filespend 8 weeks in one of the listed countries belowhave little to no previous experience in the country in which he/she plans to study

The Freeman Foundation Scholarship for East Asia Internships provides awards ranging from $2,500 - $5,000 to undergraduate and graduate KU students participating in credit-bearing internships of six weeks duration or longer in East or Southeast Asia.
