Ftp Login Refused Shell Not In Etc Shells

As far as getting bad shell for ftp, make sure the shell of the user you are logging in as is defined in /etc/shells. Eg: if /bin/ksh is the shell the user is loggin in as make sure /etc/shells contains /bin/ksh.

We are not able to establish connection with ftp even as root. when "ftp servername" is typed, it asks for username (root) and after that asks for password. When we type the password, it says access denied. (we tried it for different user also) In syslog file there was an entry saying "ftp login refused (bad shell)"

When /etc/shells does not exist, the system falls back to a factory-default list of standard shells. Run "man getusershell" to find the default list. If the user's shell was not exactly one of the listed standard shells, ftpd would not allow him to login, exactly as if /etc/shells existed and contained the default list.
