In library and information science, cataloguing (UK) or cataloging (US) is the process of creating metadata representing information resources, such as books, sound recordings, moving images, etc. Cataloging provides information such as creator names, titles, and subject terms that describe resources, typically through the creation of bibliographic records.

RDA stands for “Resource Description and Access” and is the title of the standard, that is the successor to AACR2. Resource Description and Access (RDA) is a standard for descriptive cataloging providing instructions and guidelines on formulating bibliographic data.

RDA/AACR2 hybrid records are now permitted in Evergreen Indiana. Because OCLC has decided to add RDA elements to existing AACR2 records, and many libraries are likely to follow suit, hybrid records are becoming more and more common in catalogs.

Such cataloging copy may include current RDA or AACR2 cataloging such as cataloging-in-publication data that is in the book. Alternatively, it may include printed cataloging copy that is pre-RDA and pre-AACR2 such as data found in the The National Union Catalog, Pre-1956 Imprints.
